Explore West

West of Raymont House is the rugged coastline of west Devon and north Cornwall. There are no towns that we would particularly recommend, but there is more than enough to warrant at least one day out in that direction.

Docton Mill* Docton Mill Gardens
After RHS Rosemoor, this is our favourite Devon garden. It's a spring and summer garden with a very natural feel to it. It makes the very best of the topography, location and mill workings. The house is not grand, just an old working mill. Lunch or take a Devon cream tea in the Tea Room. Phone 01237 441369. Distance from Raymont House 37 miles. SatNav EX39 6EA.

Hartland Coast* Clifftop Walks between Hartland and Duckpool
The cliffs along this 15-mile stretch of the South West Coast Path provide our favourite walks and must be among the most scenic in the British Isles. We particularly recommend the cliffs around Hartland Point, Hartland Quay, Morwenstow and Duckpool. Distance from Raymont House 35 miles.

Sandymouth BeachSandymouth Beach
If relaxing on a beach away from the crowds is your thing, then this beach is ideal. It's a long beach with plenty of space to spread out and rocks, pools and cliffs to add interest. Tearoom and toilets available. Distance from Raymont House 28 miles. SatNav to EX23 9HW, then a mile along a lane to the beach car park.

Boscastle HarbourBoscastle
A fishing village in a dramatic setting with some touristy shops, but not overly so. Famous for the 2004 flood. Walk along the north side of the harbour as far as the sea (Penally Point) to get a feel for how boats from the stormy Atlantic must welcome the calm of the harbour. If your legs are up to it, try walking south along the South West Coast Path towards (or to!) Tintagel. Distance from Raymont House 42 miles. SatNav for car park PL35 0HE.

Harris Arms* The Harris Arms, Lewdown
If you like top-notch food, beer and wine, a visit to this unpretentious gastro-pub is essential. Andy and Rowena are very welcoming. We like to go there for special celebrations. Phone 01566 783331. Distance from Raymont House 19 miles. SatNav EX20 4PZ.
