Crediton Church of the Holy Cross
Dating back to 749 A.D. when there was a monastery on this site, Crediton Church has a longer history than Exeter Cathedral, and indeed it was the cathedral of the diocese of Devon and Cornwall for many years in Saxon times. The present building dates from a Norman reconstruction, and for us it still exudes centuries of history. The history is more fully described here. Take a tour or pick up an excellent guide. Notable things to see: the windows dedicated to the life of St. Boniface (a son of Crediton), the Tuckfield Memorial, the tomb of Sir John de Sully and his wife (date c. 1390 A.D.), the Buller Memorial, the tomb of Sir William Peryam. Distance from Raymont House 20 miles. SatNav EX17 2AH.
The Lamb Inn, Sandford
A fine village pub acclaimed for its ales and food. Try a game of skittles! Phone 01363 773676. Distance from Raymont House 21 miles. SatNav EX17 4LW but park by the parish hall.
Exeter
There's more than enough for a day out in Exeter. Shopaholics should aim straight for the Princesshay Shopping Centre and the High Street. If you do only one thing, visit Exeter Cathedral, but its attractions are too many to mention here, so just one - the 13th century misericords (tip-up seats). Stretch your legs around the Quayside and browse the gift and antique shops, cafés and bars. If time allows, visit the 14th century Underground Passages, unique in Britain. Lunch at * Michael Caines' Café Bar or his ABode restaurant, both in the Cathedral Close. Distance from Raymont House 28 miles. SatNav for Quayside car park (via Crediton) EX1 1DX.
* Killerton (National Trust)
The attractions here for us are the extensive gardens with many unusual mature trees and the collection of period costumes. Phone 01392 881345. Distance from Raymont House 32 miles. SatNav (via Crediton) EX5 3LE.
* Topsham
A small attractive town on the Exe estuary. We go at least once a year to look round the small shops and stroll by the estuary to watch the boats and wildlife. Quay Antiques is right next to the quay car park and with bric-a-brac occupying several floors, is a goldmine for antique lovers. Visit *"The Café" at 76 Fore Street for a budget lunch, or The Galley fish and seafood restaurant for finer dining. Distance from Raymont House 39 miles. SatNav for Quay car park EX3 0HZ.
The Tom Cobley, Spreyton
For fans of real ale, this is difficult to beat, with a huge range of beers and ciders, all of them very well kept. Landlord and staff are very welcoming. It's popular with locals and visitors alike. The village is a quiet and charming place, so sit at the tables outside if it's warm, otherwise in the front bar which has a very traditional feel to it. We've tried the beer but not the food. Phone 01647 231314. Distance from Raymont House 13 miles. SatNav EX17 5AL.
